A new report from Variety confirms that Joker 2, officially titled Joker: Folie à Deux, will adopt a musical format, teasing a significant shift from the original movie. The sequel is rumored to be structured as a jukebox musical, potentially featuring over 15 reinterpretations of well-known songs. The extent of original music within the film remains uncertain.
Insiders close to Joker 2 revealed that the Todd Phillips film might include iconic tracks like “That’s Entertainment” from “The Band Wagon,” highlighting the diverse musical selection. While the possibility of adding original songs exists, details about the composers or performers are yet to be announced. Oscar-winning Joker composer Hildur Guðnadóttir is returning for the sequel, bringing her unique sound to the musical elements of the sequel.
The use of a jukebox musical format represents a departure from traditional comic book adaptations, indicating Joker: Folie à Deux might offer audiences a distinct cinematic experience. Joker: Folie à Deux has been deep in post-production, gearing up for its theatrical release on October 4, 2024. What can audiences expect from the Joker sequel?
After the first film ended with Arthur Fleck in Arkham State Hospital, it’s likely that – as in previous iterations – Harleen Quinzel will start out as the Joker’s psychiatrist. Plot details are being kept under wraps but a significant chunk of the sequel is expected to take place within Arkham.
Todd Phillips is directing Joker: Folie à Deux from a script he co-wrote alongside Scott Silver, who also worked on the original. The cast of Folie à Deux also features Brendan Gleeson, Zazie Beetz, Catherine Keener, Jacob Lofland and Harry Lawtey.
