Passenger bravely documented the situation inside LATAM flight and showed scenes of crew helping injured passengers.
A terrifying incident shook passengers on a LATAM Airlines flight traveling from Australia’s Sydney to Auckland in New Zealand. With 263 passengers and 9 cabin crew members on board, the flight suddenly nosedived mid air, leaving more than a dozen people hospitalised and around 50 injured. Shocking footage captured inside the Boeing jet that offers a glimpse into the chaos and panic that followed. Passenger Max Dineley bravely documented the situation and showed scenes of crew helping injured passengers. Initial reports suggest the plane experienced a severe shake, but the airlines in a statement didn’t provide major details. While most injuries were mild, 50 received on site treatment, 13 individuals were hospitalised and one was in serious condition.
In the video, Dineley can be seen turning the phone camera towards himself and revealing the messy condition. He described the turbulence as “mad” and claimed that people were injured, while some were even bleeding. Amidst the fuss, passengers could be heard checking on each other’s well-being, despite their shock. In a conversation with Storyful, the passenger said, “It was ludicrous how we all thought we were going to die. I even recorded a video for my mum in case we didn’t make it.”
Another passenger, speaking with NBC, explained, “Everything was going well, then, all of a sudden, the plane took a nosedive down. People were flying out of their seats, hitting the roof, being thrown back four or five aisles back. I saw him lying on the ceiling looking down at me. He was fully out-stretched. And then, bang, I looked behind and everyone was falling off the ceilings. But those days are over. I will always keep my seat belt on, because what I saw in that plane was people flying like rag dolls.”
LATAM Airlines provided a statement regarding the incident and claimed the flight landed safely at Auckland Airport at the scheduled time despite the turbulence experienced mid-flight. Following the incident, 10 passengers from various countries and three cabin crew members were taken to a hospital for treatment. Most passengers were discharged shortly after, only one passenger and one cabin crew member required further attention.
The airline said it was in touch with authorities to investigate the incident and that they arranged alternate flights for affected passengers. LATAM further ensured that affected passengers received necessary support, including food, accommodation and transportation due to the flight cancellation.
