Was Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania destined to fail? Katy O’Brian recently spoke on the chaotic filming of one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest flops.
Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania was a historic box office flop for the superhero genre. The film seemed set to dominate its opening weekend, introducing fans to the MCU’s next big bad in Jonathan Majors as Kang and continuing a franchise that had at least lukewarm success critically and commercially.
The film struggling as badly as it did didn’t just come as a surprise to fans. The writer for Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania was surprised when the film became a critical flop, with Jonathan Majors’ legal worries keeping the project from ever recovering in the eyes of fans.
The Rough Production Of Ant-Man & The Wasp
However, it seems as though the failure of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania didn’t come out of nowhere. When speaking on the production of the MCU film, Jentorra actress Katy O’Brian revealed that the script was being changed up until the final day of filming.
“Yeah, that was absolutely chaotic,” the actress told Entertainment Weekly. “I think we were getting new pages until the last day, and I think I was getting new fights the last day. I just show up, and they’re like, here’s a new fight.”
This news doesn’t paint the greatest picture for the production of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. It’s also far from the only MCU film to suffer the same fate, with Doctor Strange In The Multiverse of Madness also suffering through multiple rewrites during production.
Still, O’Brian called her MCU experience “lovely.” “I thought me being this kind of like newbie, they might, I don’t know, either ignore me or I would just feel out of place, but they just always made it as welcoming as possible. I was surprised by that environment,” she added.
Unlike Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, however, it’s unclear what changed in the final script for Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania. Previous rumors have suggested that the film originally ended with Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne stuck in the Quantum Realm. However, given how small the ending scene was and Katy O’Brian referring to action sequences, it seems the script went through multiple systemic changes during production.
It seems as though Marvel is trying to put the failures of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania behind it. While the studio was previously all-in on Jonathan Majors as Kang, recent reports have suggested that Avengers 5 will undergo a title change to try to distance the film from the character as much as possible. There’s also been no word on who would replace Majors as the villain, although some rumors suggest the studio is eyeing a veteran from The Walking Dead to take over the role in the MCU.
