Can leaks ever truly be avoided? Director Shawn Levy speaks on the recent string of Deadpool and Wolverine leaks that have come out of CinemaCon.
CinemaCon has been a fantastic time for Deadpool and Wolverine fans, with footage descriptions and costume reveals galore clogging your news feeds as news breaks out of the walls of the convention. However, it seems not everyone is enjoying seeing Hugh Jackman stuffed into spandex. When asked about the recent string of leaks, Deadpool and Wolverine director Shawn Levy lamented about the inevitable balancing act when it comes to big films such as this.
“The truth is, Disney is a big machine,” Levy explained to Collider. “They’ve empowered us with huge freedom in the making of this movie but this is a big movie release and there’s going to be a lot of those merchandise, ancillary things in the world. And it’s a balance between being in that world and preserving the delight of surprise. Those are conversations we’re having all the time.”
It’s certainly true that a release as big as Deadpool and Wolverine makes keeping secrets almost impossible, especially given the film was disrupted by the Hollywood strikes, causing all sorts of chaos in the production line. However, what’s become clear in recent weeks is that Shawn Levy is able to keep plenty of surprises as a director in order to make the leaks seem trivial in comparison.
Shawn Levy Teases Deadpool’s Popcorn Bucket
Yet it seems director Shawn Levy doesn’t think all merch teasing is bad. During the same CinemaCon conversation, he spoke on how Deadpool and Wolverine‘s popcorn bucket will look after the recent virality of Dune‘s sandworm bucket. According to the director, it’s a design that’ll be more than worthy to follow such a spectacle.
“That might be one of the greatest strokes of genius that Ryan Reynolds has had on this movie,” Levy explained to Collider. “You’ll just have to wait and see [what that looks like].”
Dozens of ideas have circulated about what Deadpool and Wolverine‘s popcorn bucket could look like. Some have suggested head sculpts of the film’s leads, while others have floated a straight parody of Dune‘s popcorn bucket. Regardless, it seems as though this is another secret Shawn Levy is content with keeping until release.
Deadpool and Wolverine is currently expected to be released on July 26, 2024. Stay tuned for the latest news regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more content!
