At the conclusion of the major 2024 studio presentations at CinemaCon, The Walt Disney Studios captivated the audience with a stunning reveal of over 75 minutes of footage from its upcoming film slate. Among the standout moments was a preview from Deadpool & Wolverine, which brought together Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in a long-awaited on-screen reunion for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The Disney presentation began with a humorous PSA featuring Deadpool and Wolverine, cleverly referencing Secret Wars and reminding attendees to turn off their cell phones, setting a lighthearted tone for the panel. Although the rest of the Deadpool & Wolverine footage has not been released to the public, descriptions from CinemaCon attendees have quickly spread online.
What happens in the Deadpool and Wolverine CinemaCon footage
The Deadpool & Wolverine footage presented at CinemaCon highlighted Wade Wilson’s characteristic mix of humor and action. At one point, Wade walks into his surprise birthday party and quips, “If this were five years ago, you’d all be dead.” The scene then shifts to a light-hearted moment where Colossus expresses his love for The Great British Bake-Off. The dialogue also touches on the boundaries set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Deadpool noting, “Cocaine is the one thing [Kevin] Feige said is off-limits.”
The footage also explores the complexities of Wade’s life, showing his interactions with Rob Delaney’s Peter as they reminisce about their days as superheroes, with Wade declaring, “I’m done.” Deadpool is now a car salesman, but the arrival of the Time Variance Authority (TVA) at his door shakes things up. Mr. Paradox, a member of the TVA, explains their role to Wade: “We’re really a watchdog organization… we’re in charge of defending the Sacred Timeline.” He then informs Deadpool of his mission, “You’ve been chosen for a higher purpose… one that could save the entire Sacred Timeline.”
At some point during the exchange, Wade watches Thor crying over his body on a monitor. Paradox reveals, “That happens in the distant future.” The footage then transitions to Wade at the TVA’s tailor, where he insists on keeping his katanas as he’s fitted for a new suit. As he gets into a car with Wolverine, a comment about his outfit prompts Wade to say, “Why do your friends let you leave the house looking like you play for the Los Angeles Rams?” The footage ends with Wolverine’s blunt response, “Shut the f–k up.”
Directed by Shawn Levy, Deadpool and Wolverine also holds special significance as it marks the character’s entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox. The film is set to maintain the R-rating that has been a hallmark of the Deadpool series, even under the Disney umbrella.
Deadpool and Wolverine is currently scheduled to hit theaters on July 26, 2024. Stay tuned for the latest news about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
