Quantumania’ Reportedly One Of Marvel’s Most Expensive Movies

Was Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania doomed to flop? A new report suggests the film went massively over Marvel’s projected budget.

The fate of Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania was truly a modern day tragedy. While the film was far from perfect, the surrounding superhero landscape and controversies surrounding Jonathan Majors cemented the film as one of the biggest flops of the Marvel superhero era. However, a new report reveals that may not have been able to be avoided.

Early reports projected that Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania cost around $200 million. This is a lot, around as much as The Flash, but not impossible to overcome with a healthy box office. Yet thanks to a new report from Forbes using documents pertaining to the Audio-Visual Expenditure Credit that Marvel used during filming in the UK, it’s been revealed the film cost an astonishing $326.6 million!

How Marvel Burned Money On Ant-Man

One may wonder how any movie, let alone one like Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, could cost so much to film. Yet it seems filming wasn’t the issue. According to Forbes, Marvel spent $131.9 million on post-production for the project, which accounts for over a third of the budget. While understandable that the project would need a lot of CGI given the premise, the exact cost likely came as a shock even to Marvel.

It seems Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania will turn out as a key point of reference regarding how dangerous CGI and VFX can be to a budget if not used sparringly. If Marvel had used practical sets or make-up, they likely would’ve at least caught the budget overage sooner, if not been able to do the effects for cheaper. Though given the current state of blockbusters, it’s not likely any studio will actually learn from this historic flop.
