J.K. Simmons Reveals Truth Behind Iconic ‘Justice League’ Workout Photo

Did J.K. Simmons get jacked for Jim Gordon? The actor recently revealed the truth about his viral Justice League workout photo.

Back before Justice League ever hit theaters, there was a viral photo that went around showing J.K. Simmons absolutely shredded at the gym. Many assumed that this was for his role as Jim Gordon, with that assumption being swept away as fact by the rest of the internet and causing the picture to go down in the hall of fame of all superhero workouts.

However, the truth isn’t quite as charming. According to J.K. Simmons, the photo had nothing to do with Justice League or his role as Jim Gordon. He was just working out around the same time as the film, leading many to incorrectly assume he was making gains for Gotham!

“Here’s the thing about getting jacked for Justice League,” Simmons told ComicBook.com. “I had done a movie called, ‘I’m Not Here,’ coincidentally, written and directed by my wife. I played a character who was emaciated, think of The Machinist, and I had lost a ton of weight, and without being unhealthy I’d lost 35 pounds.”

“So when I went back into the gym with my pal, Aaron Williamson, and just started pounding the protein and going crazy at good old Gold’s Gym in Laurel Canyon in the valley. He snapped a few pictures when I was really pumped up and at my strongest during that period, asked if I would be okay if he posted it on Instagram. I didn’t know what Instagram was, I didn’t know anything. This was a few years ago. And I was like, yeah, sure, whatever.”

“And then three, four months later, all of a sudden, somebody’s whatever, it reposting it and I get texts from 30 friends in the same day, ‘What the hell? Whoa, man, that picture, blah, blah, blah.’ And the press got ahold of it and said, because I was about to do Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the assumption was, ‘Oh, well, he’s getting jacked so he can be in a DC comic.’”

“But if you think about it, Commissioner Gordon wears a trench coat the whole movie. So it really doesn’t matter what his biceps look like, it was just coincidental timing with me trying to reclaim my distant athletic youth and trying to stay fit and give my wife some eye candy.”

It makes sense that Zack Snyder never had plans for J.K. Simmons to bust heads as Jim Gordon in Justice League. However, this sadly takes away one of the few truly funny moments from the lead-up to that film. Maybe Jeffrey Wright will get ripped for redemption in The Batman: Part II.

J.K. Simmons’ Future In The World Of Heroes

Even though J.K. Simmons likely won’t be returning as Jim Gordon in whatever Justice League reboot is being cooked up in the new DC Universe, this doesn’t mean he’s out of the action game. Later this year, the actor is set to star as a jacked Saint Nick in Red One with Chris Evans and The Rock for Amazon Studios.

J.K. Simmons also voices Omni-Man in Invincible, with the show’s second season just now returning from its midseason break. His take on the character has become iconic among fans, being the definitive voice for the character across memes and impressions. He even got to reprise his role in Mortal Kombat 1!

Fans can’t forget about Spider-Man. J.K. Simmons’ most iconic role is that of J. Jonah Jameson in the Raimi trilogy. While there’s no word on when or if he’ll return to the MCU, it’s possible he’ll make a cameo appearance in the Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man animated series for Disney Plus.
