Ewan McGregor could have had a much darker return to the Star Wars universe! The actor reveals scrapped plans for an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie.
Fans were over Tatooine’s three moons when it was announced that Ewan McGregor would return for his own Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney Plus. While the project was a tad underwhelming for hardcore fans, it serves as a solid entry in the Star Wars mythos. However, according to McGregor, the original plans for his return were for a gritty movie.
“The first episode used to start with me as a waiter in a bar,” McGregor explained during a recent appearance with Vanity Fair. “You know, like he’s really lost his way, Obi-Wan. He’s working in a bar, he’s drinking too much, I get beaten up. People are kicking me, and I’m just like taking it, and then stalking out, you know, into the night. I mean, that was our first ideas anyway. There was a draft where that’s how it started.”
“We were talking about a movie at that point, not a TV series,” He continued. “Disney Plus wasn’t there yet. I said, ‘All I can see is him broken after some time after ‘Episode III,’ and he’s in a really dark place.’”
A dark Obi-Wan Kenobi movie would’ve certainly shaken up current perceptions about the Star Wars franchise. However, it seems the Disney Plus series may have been the right way to go, with the extended length allowing for a more in-depth study on the character than would’ve been possible in two and a half hours.
Ewan McGregor’s Star Wars Future
As of writing, Obi-Wan Kenobi has still not been greenlit for a season 2 on Disney Plus. However, both the show’s director Deborah Chow and Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy have expressed interest in bringing Ewan McGregor back for another season of the Star Wars series.
Ewan McGregor himself has also been keen on returning as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a future Star Wars project. With Ahsoka getting her own show and Hayden Christensen returning as Anakin Skywalker, the possibilities of an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie seem more likely than ever.
