Could Phil Coulson be making his grand return to the MCU? Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star Clark Gregg speaks on his potential future.
Phil Coulson has become one of the most beloved original characters in the MCU. The character starred in his own spin-off with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. following his appearance in The Avengers, with Clark Gregg’s stellar performance cementing him in the hearts of fans around the globe. Despite his impressive tenure, Gregg admits he still hopes to return as the character in the future.
“[Coulson isn’t dead] in every timeline!” Gregg explained during a recent interview on an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fan podcast. “Look, you are playing in a Multiverse scenario in various timelines without you being like, ‘I don’t know, there’s many Multiverses here…’ People are very upset about whether things are canon [or not], and I love that Kevin [Feige] is [like] The Oz.”
It certainly wouldn’t be out of the question for Phil Coulson to return to the silver screen. Clark Gregg already reprised his role in Captain Marvel, albeit the entire film took place in the past. Fans have also been begging for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stars like Chloe Bennet to return to the MCU despite the show’s questionable canon, leaving the door open for Coulson’s revival to be made official.
Clark Gregg’s Return To The Avengers Franchise
The MCU project fans are most hoping for Clark Gregg to return in is Avengers: Secret Wars. Not only is Phil Coulson a representative of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and its related corner of the Marvel Universe, but the character played a pivotal role in the first Avengers film. It would only make sense for the character to return, and Gregg seems to agree.
“That’s really sweet. I just love that there’s a connection with [Phil] Coulson, I think, because he was such an early part of the thing and the kind of human face of the world.” Clark Gregg explained when asked if he’d want to return. “But the canon of people that they feel that way about has grown and there’s plenty…It’s hard for me to go, ‘Yeah, it’s alright, I had 10 great years, maybe 12,’ but yes.”
Perhaps Avengers: Secret Wars will hold a universe where Phil Coulson is the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. instead of Nick Fury. Though regardless of if he does return or not, Clark Gregg’s take on the character in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will live on in the hearts of MCU fans as a representation of a much simpler time in Marvel’s brand.
